The District 9 Leadership Lab Taught Me More Than I Expected

Looking back on the District D9 Leadership Lab, I walked away with a lot more than I expected going in. It wasn't just another 4-H event. It felt like a crash course in growing up and stepping into leadership.

The professional skills we covered really stuck with me. Learning how to present myself in an interview, from what to wear to how to carry myself, made me realize how much confidence comes from just knowing what's expected of you. The "Shark Tank" activity pushed that even further. Having to think on my feet and pitch an idea using 4-H merchandise was intimidating at first, but it ended up being one of the most fun parts of the whole lab. On top of that, learning fine dining etiquette gave me a skill I genuinely didn't have before. I used to feel awkward at formal meals, and now I actually know what I'm doing.

Then there were the more hands-on, practical skills, like learning how to change a tire and getting an introduction to budgeting and basic finances. Those are the kinds of things that don't always get taught, but they matter. I feel more prepared to handle real situations because of them.

The team-building activities, especially building a tower out of cups, reminded me how much communication and patience matter when you're working with a group under pressure. It's easy to want to take over or get frustrated, but those moments taught me how to listen and work better with others.

One of the most meaningful parts of the lab, though, was the conversation about where our district is headed for the new year. Being part of that discussion made me feel like my voice actually matters in 4-H. Like I'm not just a member, but someone who can help shape what our district does next. It gave me a sense of ownership that I want to carry forward.

And of course, ending the lab with a trip to Schlitterbahn in Galveston was the perfect way to relax and bond with everyone after two days of hard work. It reminded me that leadership isn't just about being serious all the time. It's also about building real relationships with the people you're growing alongside.

Overall, this lab reminded me why I love being part of 4-H. It challenged me, taught me skills I'll actually use, and gave me a chance to help shape the future of our district. I'm walking away more confident and more excited for what's next.
